About Us

An Independent House

Éditions Komorebi is a small publishing house based in Paris, that was brought to life in order to share meaningful and authentic stories, based on real encounters—independently from the classic pressures of the publishing industry. The name Editions Komorebi was chosen to reflect a spirit of wanderlust, and curiosity for discovery.

About the author

Alexandra Caulea is the author behind the guidebooks published by Éditions Komorebi, the independent publishing house she founded. The project stems from a lifelong passion for Japan that has shaped her work for over a decade. It all began in 2013, when she worked as a photojournalist for a tourism company, discovering the archipelago through words and images while documenting her encounters for local media. A defining moment, watching artisans at work in a small neighbourhood bakery, sparked the vision that continues to guide her today: to share what deserves to be seen, told, and passed on, Without overshadowing the artists and craftsmen who drive contemporary Japanese culture. She founded Éditions Komorebi as a space to showcase and preserve their stories, and amplify their voices.

What is Komorebi?

Komorebi (木漏れ日) is the Japanese word referring to the beautiful image of sunlight filtering through leaves and branches. It echoes our mission of taking time to appreciate the extraordinary within the ordinary.

Our logo’s symbol, Wakagi

The tree represented in our logo is Wakagi (若木), the sapling engraved on the 1 Yen coin in Japan. Not many know that Wakagi is in fact a fictional tree, designed to embody the symbols of growth, potential, and hope for the future. It’s commonly seen in everyday life, yet the tree’s intriguing story often goes unnoticed.

Designer Akira Nemoto chose Wakagi as our symbol, as it reflects our values: finding the unnoticed beauty in the commonplace, inspiring discovery, and connecting rich local cultures to a global audience.
